How does an IPL treatment works
IThe Dermeo IPL used at the Athenaeum Spa in Malta emits high-energy pulses of light directed at the hair follicles (hair roots) where hair actually grows. The Dermeo actually emits a wide band of light which is then filtered. These filters target different chromophores in the skin. The red light is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) within the hair shaft, causing the temperature to rise with destruction of the hair follicle. The yellow light targets the blood supply to the germ (growth) cells in the hair follicle, resulting in further inhibition of hair regrowth.
Because IPL uses a much broader spectrum of light than laser, it is suitable for a wider range of hair colours and skin types. Furthermore, IPL treats a much larger area of skin per light pulse than laser, which makes the treatment much faster and more cost effective than laser hair removal. The IPL treatments at the Athenaeum Spa in Malta are fast and cheaper than similar treatments on the Island.
During the treatment a small hand piece will be used to touch your skin with flashes of light; a cooling spray, air or gel may also be applied. Most people describe the procedure as a little uncomfortable, with a tingling or stinging sensation. IPL Skin Treatments using photo rejuvenation often consist of full-face treatment or treatment of isolated body areas like the hands or chest. The treatment regimen typically consists of four to six treatments administered at three week intervals. The client must use a complete sun block and refrain from staying the sun post treatment.
As a sub-epidermal procedure, IPL Skin Treatments using photo rejuvenation produce few side effects and requires little to no alteration in the patient's normal routine.
Is IPL safe?
IPL is safe, non-invasive, has minimal side effects and requires no recovery time. IPL is gentler than laser and much faster as a larger area can be treated with each flash. We believe it is the most advanced hair removal and skin treatment system available.
The medical staff at the Athenaeum Spa in Malta values the comfort and safety of the client very highly and will take the greatest care to ensure that you feel at ease about every aspect of the treatment.
Do I need to do anything before my treatment?
No major preparations are necessary, but you may want to read the guidelines offered on your treatment sheet which is available at Athenaeum Spa in Malta. Refrain from shaving, waxing or plucking for a week prior to treatment.
How long does a treatment take?
The consultation and patch test take about 30 minutes. The IPL treatment itself can take as little as 15 minutes or as long as 2 hours, depending on the area(s) being treated. This will be discussed with you during your consultation. Sometimes it may be necessary to trim the hairs prior to treatment.
